A few things folks can do to support SW and SWers

A few things folks can do to support SW and SWers

Want to support SW and SWers? Here’s my list!

  • Pay for your porn when you can.

  • Speak up when people are being shitty to SWers and SW. Don’t make jokes, and when jokes are made do practice defusing jokes and do practice advocacy.

  • Don’t shame the work. When you work manual labor, you too are “selling your body”, think about your words.

  • Advocate for the importance and prevalence of SW and SWers online and in your social circles.

  • Follow SWers on social media and share their stuff. If you appreciated it, spread the word, tip them, show them respect.

  • Learn, advocate and share information about decriminalization of SW. Here on NPR

  • Do internal work about your whore-phobia. Confront it.

  • Read, share and fund struggling, disabled, harmed SWers.

  • Get tested for STIs, share pictures of yourself after your appointments, advocate and share resources for others to get regularly tested. Normalize taking care of your sexual health.

  • Learn about FOSTA-Sesta and how it affects SW and SWers. Here on WHYY.org

  • Share information about mutual aid funds, and give if you’ve got it. Here's the one closest to me

  • Go to shows and events and tip SWers and performers.

  • If you know someone was banned on social media, help get them either get un-banned, or help them rebuild their platform by following and sharing their new handle.

  • If you see something in person, don’t call the cops.

  • Don’t *out* folks who do SW to their families, exes, emts, cops, friends or their 9 to 5 jobs.

  • At an *age appropriate* level teach your children and teens about sex, gender, consent, boundaries, pornography, and SWers and SW. Tons of movies and shows feature SWers, it will come up, and you will need to explain the idea of people paying for sex, providing companionship, safe touch, adult play and entertainment, and people who do sex work. If they old enough, consider telling them that SWers are arrested, harmed and killed for doing work that is much needed and desired in the community.

  • If you know someone who’s a SW in your community, consider asking them privately what support they currently need. SW is dangerous because of how we treat SWers.
